All American Departure

img_3472.JPGWhen I arrived at the Avis office, I was given what must have been a triple upgrade — from our usual tuna fish can, sub-sub-economy class reservation — to my choice of a PT Cruiser (okay, maybe only a double upgrade on that) or a brand spankin’ new Ford Mustang. This was not my mother’s 1967, baby blue Mustang. No, this was a powerful machine meant to accelerate at the tap of the gas pedal, climb Carrillo Hill effortlessly, attract car aficionados and hot babes alike. Yes, this was a man’s car – great styling on the outside, great guts and an ergonomic nightmare inside. Maybe women buy the convertible, hoping to look like Lindsey Wagner in those old commercials, but I suspect most who want a sports cart opt for something German or Italian.

Alan drove us to LAX in our All-American, manly, man car.

I’ll not waste time writing about Delta Airlines. Great, cheap price. In this case, we got what we paid for. However, we had the good fortune of sitting next to a gentleman from Guatemala (grew up in Japan, fluent in English, extremely well educated and likely very well off) who, for the past 20 years, has been working to build a city that is economically and environmentally self-sustainable as well as socially just. It won’t be a utopia, but it sounds pretty darn close. The pilot city will be completed in 18 months. I’ll be doing much more research on the project when we get home and will be happy to share details with any of you who may be interested in learning more about City of Light.

Gautemala Bound

world-guatemala.JPGThe decision has been made and the tickets have been bought. This year, Harriet and I are headed to Guatemala for our annual November vacation. Based on our minimal investigations, Guatemala meets all of our criteria: good food, lots of color, cultural sites, and inexpensive.

It will be one of our least grueling travel experiences, at least in terms of getting to our destination. A five hour flight and only a one hour time difference

guatemala2.JPGWe’ll be flying out of L.A. on Sunday, October 28th and traveling directly to Guatemala City. From there, we’ll take a 45 minute bus ride to Antigua where we will start our adventures. After that – well if you know us you know we have very little planned. You’ll see where we’ve been shortly after we surprise ourselves.

We do know we’ll be coming back on Tuesday, November 2oth – in plenty of time for Thanksgiving. And we have a house sitter taking care of everything (the dogs!) while we are gone.

We’ll be posting our travel updates to this blog as we did for the Malaysia trip. Soon we’ll be sending out an email to confirm the addresses we have for folks and whether or not you’d like to get email notices of our updates. Remember, Harriet typically writes the text – so your won’t get a lot of “engineer grammar”. I’ll just step in with facts and figures (like this post).

That’s our update and we look forward to staying in touch with everyone during out trip (these internets are cool tubes!)
